Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)
What is amblyopia?
Amblyopia is poor vision in an eye that didn't develop normal sight during early childhood. It is sometimes called "lazy eye".
What causes amblyopia?
Amblyopia is caused by any condition that affects normal use of the eyes and visual development.
Why does my child have to wear a patch?
Patching the good eye forces the weaker eye to work. To correct amblyopia, a child must use the weak eye. This is usually done by patching the strong eye, often for weeks or months.
Is it really important for my child to wear a patch every day?
Yes, it is very important that you follow the doctor's orders for patching. The weaker eye must be made stronger in order to see better.
When he puts the patch on, my child complains he cannot see.
This is true. When you put the patch on your child, you are patching the stronger eye. Many children will not like to wear the patch, but as a parent it is very important that you enforce the importance of patching. There are many ways to help your child pass the time:
- watching TV or a favorite movie
- coloring, cutting paper, making crafts
- reading can be a special time for you and your child to help pass the time
- be positive and encouraging
Can I put the patch on when my child sleeps?
No. Patching must be done while your child is awake.
What if the patch leaves a red mark or rash on his face?
Put a small layer of Milk of Magnesia on the rash and let it dry. Then apply the patch on top of the dried Milk of Magnesia.
Can my child use the eye drops I heard about on TV?
Speak to the doctor to see if this is an option for your child.
What if the eye starts to turn in or out?
Do not discontinue patching until your next appointment, even if you see a change in the other eye.
Do not use pirate patches.
Should my child wear her glasses and patch?
If your child is wearing glasses, he/she should keep wearing the glasses and put the patch on the eye, not on the glasses.
If not properly treated, amblyopia can cause several problems:
- the amblyopia eye may develop serious and permanent vision loss
- depth perceptions (seeing in three dimensions) may be lost
- if the good eye becomes diseased or injured, a lifetime of poor vision may result
Remember, patching is a common treatment for amblyopia; the weak eye is strengthened because it forces the child to use it.
