Cincinnati Asthma Prevention Study

Overview

Air cleaners used in this study

General and Community Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Research Foundation is studying asthma prevention using air cleaners to filter indoor air pollution. Medication, medical care and education will not be modified in this trial.

Asthma afflicts over 4.8 million U.S. children and asthma has increased by 75% during the past two decades. The greatest increase occurred among children under 5 years of age. Reasons for the increase are unclear, but exposure to indoor air pollution has been identified as one of the major risk factors for asthma in childhood.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether children with asthma benefit from the placement of portable air cleaners in their homes, to see whether the air cleaners reduce indoor air pollution and are connected with a reduction in symptoms of asthma, unscheduled visits to see a doctor, or behavioral problems.

This study aims to provide important information to develop asthma prevention strategies.
