Jeremy Deer, MD

I’m an anesthesiologist specializing in pediatric anesthesia and pediatric cardiac anesthesia. My journey into medicine began as a high school chemistry teacher—one of the most rewarding roles I’ve ever held. Teaching gave me the confidence to pursue my lifelong dream of becoming a doctor, and it taught me to never lose sight of what children and students have to teach us. That constant sense of wonder, trust and resiliency is what makes caring for pediatric patients the best part of my job.

I believe that every patient has something to teach us. It’s imperative in my practice to never lose sight of that fact and to work hard every day to keep earning the trust that families place in me.

Throughout my career, I’ve been honored to receive several teaching awards, including Outstanding Educator of the Year for both anesthesia residency and pediatric anesthesia fellowship programs, as well as the Golden Apple Teacher of the Year and Excellence in Clinical Teaching at Northwestern University.

Outside of work, I have a passion for global medical humanitarianism, which has taken me to at least six countries to teach and provide anesthesia care. I also enjoy running and spending time with my two dogs, who do their best to keep me busy. I once played the saxophone and even received full scholarships to universities for music but ultimately chose a career in science and medicine.
