Healthy Participant Study That Can Be Completed At Home for Children 20 to 48 Months Old

Why are we doing this research?

The University of Cincinnati is conducting a research study to better understand what influences sleep in young children.

Who can participate?

Children 20 to 48 months old who have not been diagnosed with any cognitive or physical disabilities, medical or behavioral conditions that could affect their sleep may be eligible to participate.

Conditions

  • Healthy Infants, Children and Adolescent Studies
  • Sleep

What will happen in the study?

The research will take place at your home. Each activity is optional. Here are some of the things that will happen in this study.

You, as the parent or guardian, will:

  • Complete 3 electronic surveys over 6 months.
  • Collect 6 saliva samples from your child to measure their hormonal alertness at a particular time of day.
  • Place a sleep monitoring watch on your child for 9 days and nights. Children should wear this watch 24 hours each day.
  • Complete surveys via text for 10 days. This takes less than 5 minutes each day and will include questions about your child’s day and sleep and reminders.
  • Snip a small sample of your child’s hair to measure alertness in their hormones during the last 3 months. (You can decide not to do this.)

What are the good things that can happen from this research?

There are no direct benefits to you or your child from taking part in this study. The results, however, from this study may help us to better understand what might influence sleep in young children.

What are the bad things that can happen from this research?

Some questions might make you feel uncomfortable, but you can decide not to answer all of the questions. Also, some children might be sensitive to wearing the sleep watches. If that is the case, you can remove the watch and notify the research team. We will discuss any of your concerns prior to the start of the study.

Will you/your child be paid to be in this research study?

Families will receive up to $200 in gift cards, 9 story books, and 1 small toy for the completion of the study.
