The Pancreas Care Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital provides focused, multidisciplinary care for children with pancreatic disorders. Our team is led by pediatric gastroenterologists and pediatric surgeons and also includes physicians from the pain management, endocrinology, oncology, and radiology departments. These experts work closely with the center’s genetics counselors, pain psychologists, dietitians, nurses and social workers to address patient needs. Staff will meet with families to discuss specific findings and individual treatment recommendations.
Our surgical and transplant capabilities are enhanced by our close working relationships with colleagues at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, who were among the first to perform the islet auto-transplantation (TPIAT) on adolescents and adults. A fully-accredited islet cell processing facility is located on the University of Cincinnati campus.
The patient’s first appointment at our center can be extensive, sometimes requiring a day or more of physician specialty appointments, testing and therapeutic interventions. Our team is available to help schedule appointments and to coordinate any necessary tests during that first visit. The medical center’s Guest Services' associates can help out-of-town guests with transportation, lodging accommodations and recreational options to make the visit to Cincinnati Children’s more comfortable.
Our Pancreas Care Center has been nationally recognized as an NPF Center by the National Pancreas Foundation. We are one of only a few children’s hospitals in the United States to receive this prestigious designation. NPF Centers are awarded after a rigorous audit review to determine that an institutions focus is on multidisciplinary treatment of pancreatitis, treating the “whole patient” with a focus on the best possible outcomes and an improved quality of life.
An approved NPF Center has to meet criteria that include having the required expert physician specialties such as gastroenterologists, pancreas surgeons, and interventional radiologists, along with more patient focused programs such as a pain management service, psychosocial support and more.
