Expert Diagnostics and Research Support for Complex Renal Disorders

The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at Cincinnati Children’s offers specialized diagnostic laboratory services focused on the role of the human complement system in immune-mediated renal diseases. Founded by complement biology pioneer Dr. Clark West, our Nephrology Clinical Laboratory supports the diagnosis and management of a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Glomerulonephritis
  • Complement deficiencies
  • Iron deficiency
  • Dysgammaglobulinemias
  • Immunoglobulin subclass deficiencies
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
  • Therapy-induced immune deficiencies
  • Hereditary angioedema

Expertise in Thrombotic Microangiopathies (TMA)

A key area of focus for our lab is diagnostic testing for thrombotic microangiopathies (TMA), including:

  • Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS)
  • Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP)

Research and Development Services

The Nephrology Clinical Lab also assists investigators across Cincinnati Children's and around the globe in all stages of biomarker research as collaborations or fee for service, from pre-clinical discovery and assay development to validation in clinical trials. The non-clinical testing is performed in our CAP and GCLP laboratory to ensure high quality data and accurate results.

Advanced Technology for Accurate Results

Our state-of-the-art laboratory features a broad range of advanced instrumentation, ensuring optimal accuracy and efficiency across all testing processes.

Core Technologies

  • Reliable nephelometric analyzer offering a broad menu of protein assays.
  • Supports evaluation of conditions including gammopathies, kidney diseases, neurologic disorders, and chronic alcohol abuse.
  • Compatible with multiple sample types.
  • Combines chemistry, STAT, and specialty testing into a compact, efficient system.
  • Capable of up to 400 photometric tests per hour (up to 800 tests per hour with ISEs).
  • Offers low sample volume requirements and streamlined workflows.
  • Uses “Flash” chemiluminescence technology (CLIA) with paramagnetic microparticles.
  • Provides access to one of the largest immunoassay test menus in the industry, including many specialty tests.
  • Features high throughput and continuous sample/reagent loading for maximum efficiency.
  • Fully automated ELISA platforms for clinical, research, and industrial use.
  • Automates all steps — sample distribution, incubation, reagent addition, washing, and detection — to ensure consistency and efficiency.
  • Compact, cost-effective system for high-performance electrochemiluminescence immunoassays.
  • Allows for rapid read times and multiplex testing on a single sample, increasing efficiency and conserving sample volume.
  • Compatible with a broad menu of commercial assay kits and custom assay development.
  • Flexible system with monochromator-based detection and high-performance filter-based detection.
  • Supports multiple applications, including fluorescence intensity (top and bottom), UV-visible absorbance, and luminescence detection.
