Specimen Handling
To ensure accurate interpretation and proper processing, all specimens must be accompanied by a surgical pathology accession sheet with detailed clinical history and differential diagnosis.
Advance Notice and Transport
Advance notice is crucial for both whole-organ dissections and consult biopsies. Please contact us before sending a specimen to coordinate shipment and processing.
- Whole-organ specimens: If applicable, include operative notes from cardiac surgical procedures. Additional studies, such as echocardiograms or catheterization reports, are highly beneficial for interpretation. Please indicate if the specimen should be returned after examination.
- Biopsy specimens: Should be delivered immediately after removal. Fresh samples should be wrapped in saline-soaked gauze, placed in a sterile container, and transported on ice.
Handling and Fixation
- Formalin-fixed tissue is acceptable for most cases, except for viral PCR and electron microscopy (EM).
- Local and in-house specimens should be hand-delivered or couriered on the same day.
- Wet tissue from distant locations should be shipped on ice via overnight service.
For additional questions or coordination, call us prior to specimen submission.
For Second Opinions
- Include all original or recut H&E slides.
- For resections requiring special studies, provide at least 10 unstained slides or representative blocks.
- Attach all relevant clinical information, including lab results and imaging studies.
