Clinical Training
The clinical curriculum in the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program at Cincinnati Children’s includes clinical experiences at three intensive care units, our 108 bed Level IV NICU at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, 60 bed Level III NICU at Good Samaritan Hospital, and 50 bed Level III NICU at the University of Cincinnati.
Fellows are also provided experiences in Neonatal Transport, Fetal Care, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, and Newborn Follow-up Clinic.
- Fellows have the opportunity to help transport and manage critically ill neonates from outborn units to higher levels of care.
- Cincinnati has one of the few fetal care programs in the country, and fellows have the opportunity to participate in subspecialized care programs, including fetal care, the congenital diaphragmatic hernia team, and ECMO at the Cincinnati Children’s NICU.
- Newborn follow-up clinic provides fellows with longitudinal exposure to the outpatient developmental and medical care of recent NICU graduates.
This broad experience ensures that neonatal fellows are fully exposed to the complete range of neonatal issues and graduate with exceptional skills in the acute and chronic management of critically ill neonates.
Clinical Rotations
The curriculum for the neonatology fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine is structured to foster camaraderie, educational excellence and outstanding patient care. To fulfill the requirements of the ABP, fellows complete 12 months of clinical service throughout their three-year education, divided into 3-week long clinical blocks. Clinical time is more concentrated in the first and second years, allowing the majority of the third year to be devoted to research. Flexibility in the clinical and call schedules allows fellows to block time and tailor their educational programs to meet their long-term career goals.

Educational Curriculum
Our Fellowship Program is committed to providing exceptional training and education to our Neonatal-Perinatal Fellows. Prior to embarking on clinical care as a fellow, all fellows entering our program complete a month-long fellowship orientation. Throughout fellowship, structured fellow educational seminars and educational conferences are organized to further supplement clinical experiences.
Fellowship Orientation: Upon entering fellowship, fellows complete a month-long orientation program to equip them with the essential medical knowledge, communication, leadership, and procedural skills necessary to take on the clinical roles of a Neonatal-Perinatal Fellow. During this time fellows participate in a combination of didactic learning, skill sessions, simulations, and buddy calls with senior fellows.
Neonatology Fellowship Seminars: Fellows have protected educational time each Wednesday afternoon dedicated to fellow education. Curricula includes: basic physiology, board-review sessions, journal club, quality improvement sessions, video review, an evidence based medicine series, simulations and procedural training, and a professional development series.
Educational Conferences: Fellows attend monthly morbidity and mortality conferences for several institutions, including Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital. Each month fellows also have the opportunity to participate in a fellow-run M&M conference with program leadership. Additionally, fellows participate in weekly Grand Rounds for the Division of Neonatology.
