Madison Moe
Research Assistant III
As a research assistant, I will be following various molecular biology protocols with the goal of learning more about eye disease and development, using zebrafish as a model. I will maintain and handle several populations of zebrafish, performing microinjections of embryos for gene knockdown and manipulation. As I am starting my position with Dr. Slavotinek, I am also currently enrolled part-time in a Master's program at Miami University in Oxford, OH. My background in this lab is in the field of evolutionary developmental (evo-devo) biology, studying the evolutionary origin of the insect wing by investigating the Hox- and cofactor-dependency of the wing-related tissues of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum. I have enjoyed applying the techniques learned from my previous research experience to a new model organism, and I have found that working in a more clinical setting (with research applications more closely related to human disease) is fascinating.
