What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Before Arriving at the Clinic

Your child should eat and hydrate normally on the day of the appointment.

Plan to arrive about 30 minutes before your appointment time. This will allow you to park, find the clinic and register. If you are running late, please contact us.

At the Appointment

Your child's first appointment will last 15 minutes to an hour. While here, you will meet with one or more members of our care team. Our team includes:

  • A pediatric nephrologist (a doctor who specializes in kidney care)
  • Registered nurses and advanced practice nurses
  • Medical assistants
  • Registered dietitians

The first clinic appointment will include:

  • A health history and physical exam
  • A urine test and blood pressure reading
  • A conversation about your child's symptoms
  • A discussion about your child's current treatment, if any
  • A review of previous lab tests and whether additional tests are needed

At the end of your appointment, the care team will share insights about your child's condition, provide treatment recommendations and answer any questions you have.

You'll receive a written after-visit summary that includes instructions and reminders about your child's care. You can take this home with you and access it on MyChart. If your child needs additional testing, the team will share results and any further treatment recommendations with you by phone, email or MyChart.

Before you leave, our staff will schedule a follow-up appointment for your child if needed.
