Myopia (Nearsighted) Study for Children 5 to 12 Years Old

Why are we doing this research?

Cincinnati Children's is conducting a research study, sometimes known as a clinical trial or clinical study, to learn how to slow or stop the progression of nearsightedness using light from a lamp. We think it is possible that violet light can help children with nearsightedness.

Who can participate?

Children 5 to 12 years old who are nearsighted may be eligible to participate.

Conditions

  • Ophthalmology

What will happen in the study?

This study includes 4 to 5 visits to Cincinnati Children’s during a 12-month period. These are the things that will happen while in the study.

We will:

  • Ask you to use a study lamp for lighting
  • Ask you to record data
  • Perform tests to measure vision at study visits
  • Optional: Collect DNA extracted from saliva at enrollment

You and your child will be given a consent form that thoroughly explains the details of the study. A member of the study staff will review the consent form with you and will be sure that your questions are answered.

What are the good things that can happen from this research?

The progression of your child’s nearsightedness may or may not slow down.

We hope to learn information from the study that may help us with more effective treatment for nearsightedness in the future.

What are the bad things that can happen from this research?

Possible risks and discomforts will be discussed with those interested in learning more about the study.

Will you/your child be paid to be in this research study?

Families will receive up to $250 for time and effort.
