Study for Children Having Surgery With the Division of Urology

Why are we doing this research?

This is a research study to learn more about the different types of fat that we all have in our bodies. In this study, we will analyze the fat surrounding the kidneys which seems to be different than most fat. This may help us understand why some kids gain more weight than others.

Who can participate?

Children who are having an eligible surgery with the division of Urology at Cincinnati Children’s may be eligible to participate.

Conditions

  • Urology
  • Diabetes

What will happen in the study?

If you agree to have your child be a part of the study, it will not require any extra visits to the hospital, as all of the procedures can be completed online, over the phone, or on the day of surgery.

Your child will:

  • Have fat samples and possibly blood collected while under anesthesia for the operation.
  • Have a designated study staff member review their medical chart.
  • Have his or her height and weight measured if those measurements are not in the medical chart in the past 6 months.

A parent or guardian will also complete an interview (over the phone or in-person the day of surgery) about the child’s medical history as well as family medical history

You will be given a consent form that thoroughly explains all of the details of the study. A member of the study staff will review the consent form with you and will be sure that all of your questions are answered.

What are the good things that can happen from this research?

There are no benefits to your child for taking part in this research study. However, you would be helping us learn more about obesity which may help other patients in the future.

What are the bad things that can happen from this research?

This is a “minimal risk” study, which means that the risks of participating are the same as ordinary daily life or routine doctor visits. We will discuss possible risks and discomforts in more detail with those interested in learning more about the study.

Will you/your child be paid to be in this research study?

Participants will not receive any payment for this study.
