Chronic Kidney Disease

Advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) leads to kidneys no longer filtering blood and removing fluid adequately. Common symptoms of CKD include:

  • Anemia (low red blood cells)
  • Fatigue (increased tiredness)
  • Frequent urination
  • Headaches
  • Loss of appetite
  • Poor growth
  • Swelling

Children with CKD may not show any symptoms.

Frequent causes of CKD include:

  • Autoimmune disease
  • Birth defects in the kidney or urinary tract
  • Blocked urine flow
  • Glomerular disease (disease that impacts the kidney’s filters)
  • Systemic disease or severe illness

End-Stage Kidney Disease

With end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), your child’s kidneys can no longer filter blood and remove waste from their body. ESKD is often associated with kidney or urinary tract birth defects.

Acute Kidney Injury

Acute kidney injuries (AKI) reduce blood flow to your kidneys. As a result, your child’s kidneys will stop working well in a short time frame—usually over hours or days

These injuries can be caused by:

  • Dehydration
  • Exposure to certain medications
  • Infections
  • Poisoning
  • Surgery complications
