Preparing Greater Cincinnati's Youngest Children for School Success—One Book at a Time
Reach Out and Read (ROR) helps young children in Greater Cincinnati develop early language and literacy skills by making books part of pediatric care. During regular check-ups, doctors and nurses encourage families to read aloud together and provide books that children can take home and keep.
By starting early, families can help children build the skills they need to succeed in school—and beyond.
What We Do
Reach Out and Read works through a community coalition led by Cincinnati Children’s. Together, we support early literacy across the region by reaching families where they already go for care.
Our Local Impact
- Cincinnati Children’s leads the Greater Cincinnati Reach Out and Read Coalition.
- The program is offered at nearly 30 Primary Care Medical Centers across Cincinnati.
- Each year, Reach Out and Read connects with families during approximately 30,000 preschool visits.
How Reach Out and Read Works
During routine pediatric visits, families receive support that makes reading a natural part of everyday life.
At Each Visit
- Children from birth through age 5 receive a free, developmentally appropriate book.
- Parents and caregivers receive simple guidance on how and why to read aloud at home.
Benefits for Children and Families
Families who participate in Reach Out and Read often experience:
- More books in the home
- Greater confidence in reading with their children
- New ways to support early language development
- Stronger preparation for school success
Most importantly, parents and caregivers are supported as a child’s first and most important teacher.
Proven Results
The first five years of life are a critical time for brain development. During these early years, children learn language rapidly—yet many children are not read to from birth. Without early exposure to words and stories, some children start school already behind their peers.
Reach Out and Read helps close that gap.
Evidence-Based Impact
- Supported by 16 independent, published research studies
- Children in the program score 3–6 months ahead on vocabulary tests compared to children not in ROR
- Children who start school on track are more likely to reach their full educational, social and life potential
A Stronger Future Starts with a Book
Reach Out and Read helps families build a strong foundation from the very beginning. Through well-child visits, medical providers offer books and guidance that help families make reading a daily habit.
Together, we’re helping Greater Cincinnati children grow into confident learners—one story at a time.
