A New Option for Children With Severe Heart Valve Disease

When your child needs a new heart valve, you may have many questions. You want to understand the treatment options and what they mean for your child’s future.

Cincinnati Children’s Living Allogenic Valve Replacement Program offers a groundbreaking new option for children with severe heart valve disease (stenosis or insufficiency).

Living allogenic valve replacement (sometimes called partial heart transplant) uses donor valve tissue that stays alive. Unlike traditional replacement valves, this tissue may grow with your child. And that means it can last a long time and fewer surgeries as your child grows.

We welcome patients and families from across the country to explore this treatment option with us. Our physicians offer in-person and telehealth visits to help you learn about the surgery and the living valve evaluation process.

Why Choose Cincinnati Children’s Living Allogenic Valve Replacement Program?

  • Innovative valve replacement: We offer a living donor valve option that may grow with your child and reduce the need for future surgeries.
  • Team-based care: Heart surgeons, cardiologists and transplant specialists work together to create a clear treatment plan.
  • Personalized treatment: We consider your child’s heart condition, growth and future needs when planning care.
  • Second opinions: Our experts help families understand their options and decide what is best for their child.

Living Allogenic Valve Replacement: Expertise and Care

Heart Surgery Expertise for Complex Conditions

For 19 consecutive years, U.S. News & World Report has ranked our Heart Institute one of the nation’s top pediatric cardiology and heart surgery programs, including seven years through our Joint Pediatric and Congenital Heart Program with Golisano Children’s at UK. We also collaborate with Akron Children’s in northeast Ohio, Mary Bridge Children’s in Washington, and Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital in Indiana. Through collaborations with these and other leading hospitals, we bring top-ranked heart care closer to home.

Innovative Treatment for Growing Children

Living allogenic valve replacement uses fresh donor valve tissue that stays alive. Unlike frozen donor valves, this tissue may grow with your child. This approach may reduce future surgeries and time under anesthesia or heart-lung bypass. Cincinnati Children’s is among the first dozen U.S. hospitals to offer this treatment. We are also the only hospital in our area to perform it. Our team carefully reviews each child’s needs before recommending surgery.

A Team of Heart Care Experts

Our surgeons are leaders in complex heart surgery and have performed thousands of valve repairs and replacements. Living allogenic valve replacement calls for many areas of expertise. Your child’s team may include congenital heart surgeons, heart disease cardiologists, transplant cardiologists, imaging and intensive care specialists. These experts work together to review your child’s needs and plan care. We also partner with your child’s local cardiologist. This helps make follow-up care closer to home when possible.

Personalized Care for Your Child

Every child has different heart and health needs. Our team considers your child’s condition, age and growth when discussing treatment. We evaluate children with truncus arteriosus, aortic valve disease, and complex heart conditions. These may include Tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia or outflow tract blockage. Not every child is a candidate. Our specialists review your child’s heart condition and overall health before recommending this option. We also offer second opinions to help families understand their options and decide what is best for their child.
