Cincinnati Children's specializes in treating complex and rare congenital heart conditions. Our pediatric and congenital cardiology experts are on the forefront of innovative techniques. That means we often treat patients that other hospitals cannot.
Our heart services combine the strengths of international experts with wrap-around care for the well-being of each patient and their family members, as well as extensive support for traveling patients. That’s why families from 48 states and 22 countries come to us for our cardiology expertise and the most advanced technologies.
Top-Ranked Care
Our cardiology and heart surgery program is ranked in the Top 5 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report as part of the Joint Pediatric and Congenital Heart Program in conjunction with University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital. Cincinnati Children's has also been ranked as one of the best overall children's hospitals in the nation for more than 15 years.
Care Close to Home
We offer more than 25 convenient outpatient locations throughout Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana to make it easier to access world-class care. These services include pediatric cardiology and adult congenital heart clinics, and some patients can be seen via our expanded telehealth services.
Superior Outcomes
Not all patients need surgery, but if they do, it’s good to know our heart surgery survival rates are among the top of nationally ranked children’s hospitals, especially for some of the most complex cases.
Our joint heart program performs an average of more than 630 cardiothoracic surgeries* and more than 800 catheterization procedures each year.
Our focus on exceptional cardiology care, from diagnosis to discharge, allows our patients to have some of the shortest post-surgical hospital stays compared to other children’s hospitals.
Deep Expertise
Our pediatric cardiologists, cardiac interventionalists and heart surgeons are known around the world for their expertise. They collaborate closely to determine the best surgical and/or advanced minimally invasive techniques to diagnose and treat each patient based on their individual needs.
In addition, our specialty hybrid cardiac catheterization suite allows our interventionists and heart surgeons to collaborate on crossover procedures with other specialists. This lets patients receive two procedures under one anesthesia, reducing the risk of complications.
Fetal Heart Program and On-Site Birthing Center
When babies are diagnosed with heart conditions before birth, our fetal cardiologists provide expert care before, during and after pregnancy. They treat the most difficult cases, often using minimally invasive procedures to treat complex heart conditions without open-heart surgery.
Under certain circumstances, babies who need surgery soon after birth can be delivered on-site in the Cincinnati Children’s Fetal Care Center Special Delivery Unit. This keeps moms close to their newborns and eliminates worries about medical transport between hospitals.
Expert Second Opinions
Cincinnati Children’s welcomes patients in need of second opinions for cardiac conditions and treatment options. Second opinions help families understand all available treatment options and make a more informed decision about which therapy is best. Many people seek out a second opinion to confirm the treatments offered by their current care team. Others look for second opinions when a condition hasn’t responded well to initial treatment.
Support for the Entire Family
Our Heart and Mind Wellbeing Center is the first program in the nation solely dedicated to helping patients and their families navigate the many mental health and emotional challenges from living with congenital heart disease. Our center is led by international experts in mental health and heart disease, and they are here to support all family members.
Advanced Genetic Testing and Support
Our cardiovascular genetic experts work alongside our pediatric cardiologist, electrophysiologist, echocardiographer, nurses and social workers. Our dedicated genetic counselors provide the full spectrum of genetic testing and evaluation. This improves diagnostic evaluations, strengthens treatment plans, and both informs and guides hereditary genetic considerations for families.
