Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Expertise and Care
Top 5 Neonatology Program in the Nation
Our NICU brings together nationally recognized neonatologists, advanced practice providers, experienced nurses and pediatric specialists from across Cincinnati Children’s.
As part of the Perinatal Institute, we combine clinical expertise, education and research to deliver advanced care for newborns with the most challenging medical and surgical conditions.
Advanced Treatments and Specialized Programs
Families come to Cincinnati Children’s for specialized programs such as congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and intestinal rehabilitation care.
We also offer advanced therapies including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), Neuro NICU care, neonatal MRI and specialized kidney support for critically ill infants.
Team-Based Care Centered on Your Family
Your baby’s care team may include neonatologists, pediatric surgeons, cardiologists, neurologists, urologists, nutrition specialists, therapists, pharmacists and social workers. Together, they develop one coordinated treatment plan tailored to your child’s needs.
Parents are an important part of that team. Our family-centered approach keeps you informed, involved and supported throughout your baby’s care. We encourage families to ask questions, participate in daily care activities and partner with the medical team every step of the way.
Large private rooms provide space for overnight stays, family meetings and time together during a challenging period.
Experience That Makes a Difference
Our team manages more than 4,100 NICU admissions each year across the region. We also complete hundreds of neonatal transports each year, helping babies quickly access specialized care when they need it most.
Innovation That Improves Care
More than 60 researchers are working to advance newborn care through discoveries in neonatal medicine, imaging and critical care.
This commitment to innovation helps bring new treatments and improved outcomes to newborns and their families.
Easing the Transition Home
When it’s time for you to take your baby home, we will ensure you have the information and support needed for this next phase of your family’s life.
After leaving the NICU with your discharge plan, our specialists continue to follow your child through dedicated programs. When medically appropriate, we offer remote patient monitoring to extend expert clinical oversight into your home. Neonatologists in our Newborn Intensive Care Follow-up Clinic assess your child’s growth, movement, speech, learning and behavior. This long-term follow-up helps babies reach their full potential.
