Apply to the Cincinnati Neurosurgery Gap Year Scholars Program
Applications are considered October through January and interviews are conducted in March. The program will begin each year on July 1. We encourage applicants to apply early in the application process.
Applicant Eligibility
- Must have completed core OMS3/M3 rotations prior to the start date, including at least one month of general or subspecialty surgery.
- Must have passed USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Level 2 prior to the start date.
- Must be enrolled in a COCA- or LCME-accredited DO or MD program without a home neurosurgery residency.
- Must have a declared interest in neurosurgery.
- Must submit a complete application within the application window, including:
- CV
- USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Level 2 score report
- Two letters of recommendation (one from the Dean of the College of Medicine and preferably one from an attending neurosurgeon)
- Letter of commitment from the student’s matriculating College of Medicine
- One-page personal statement describing the candidate’s interest in neurosurgery and how participation in this program will support professional development
- One-page research statement describing the candidate’s research interests, proposed focus areas for the year, and potential faculty mentors from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Department of Neurological Surgery
