What is Breathing Pattern Disorder?

Breathing pattern disorder is a condition that causes abnormal breathing. It is also known as dysfunctional breathing pattern. People with breathing pattern disorder may have:

  • Very rapid or shallow breathing
  • Breath holding
  • Hyperventilating
  • Other breathing irregularities, including forced abdominal breathing, excessive sighing or mouth breathing

These breathing challenges are not life-threatening. People can see a provider to help restore normal breathing patterns.
