What Is an Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction?
Intestinal pseudo-obstruction (IPO) is a rare condition in which the intestines have difficulty moving food, fluids and gas through the digestive tract. Although symptoms can look like a bowel blockage, there is no physical blockage. Instead, the problem is in how the muscles or nerves of the intestine work.
IPO can affect children or adults and may be temporary or long-lasting (chronic). In children, it is often present from birth or early infancy.
