Infant Oral Health Checklist
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the Division of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics at Cincinnati Children’s suggest that children visit the dentist within six months after getting their first tooth or no later than age 1.
- Clean your child’s mouth daily even if they don’t have teeth yet.
- Start brushing your child’s teeth with a fluoride toothpaste as soon as teeth grow in, usually around 6 months old.
- Stop giving your child a bottle by age 1, unless it is medically needed.
- Use only water in the bottle or sippy cup while your child is sleeping.
- Offer your child plenty of water and milk to drink.
- Feed your child healthy foods, limit sweets to special occasions.
- Limit sodas, juice and drinks containing caffeine.
- Limit snacking in between meals.
- Examine your child’s teeth regularly.
- Have regular dental checkups, starting no later than age 1.
