Division Director at Cincinnati Children’s Elected AAAS Fellow

Marc Rothenberg, MD, PhD, director of the division of Allergy and Immunology and the Cincinnati Center for Eosinophilic Disorders at Cincinnati Children’s, has been elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Fellows are elected by their peers and recognized for meritorious efforts to advance science or its applications.

Dr. Rothenberg’s research focuses on elucidating the mechanisms of allergic responses, especially in mucosal tissues such as the gastrointestinal tract and lung. The goal of his research is to identify mechanisms of allergic inflammation, with the aim of developing and testing novel pharmaceutical targets for the treatment and cure of patients with a variety of allergic diseases, especially eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders, such as eosinophilic esophagitis; hypereosinophilic syndrome; asthma; and food allergies.

His extensive publications include book chapters and more than 270 articles on molecular mechanisms of allergic responses. He has served on various review panels for journals and grant agencies, including the Burroughs Trust, the Medical Research Council of the United Kingdom and the National Institutes of Health, where he served on the Advisory Council of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. His research has been supported by numerous sources, including the National Institutes of Health, United States of America Department of Defense, Human Frontier Science Program Organization, Burroughs Wellcome Fund, Dana Foundation, Campaign Urging Research for Eosinophilic Diseases Foundation and Food Allergy & Research Education, Inc.

In addition to his own research, Rothenberg has mentored numerous scientists and clinicians, sees patients suffering from allergic and immunological diseases from around the world, and has helped to build a top program in pediatric allergy and immunology.

“Being elected as an AAAS Fellow is a great honor,” says Dr. Rothenberg, “one that I hope will bring greater attention to the growing health concern and unmet needs of allergic and eosinophilic disorders and will further support medical research.”

Each year, the AAAS Council elects members whose “efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished.” Dr. Rothenberg’s previous awards include the Pharmacia Allergy Research Foundation Award for the best young investigator in the allergy field; the Young Investigator Award and the Scholar in Allergy Award from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology; the Ohio Governor’s Recognition Award; the 2007 E. Mead Johnson Award from the Society of Pediatric Research; and, in 2010, a National Institutes of Health MERIT Award, which provides support to investigators whose research expertise and contributions are both exceptional and sustainable, from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.

Dr. Rothenberg will receive his award at the 2014 AAAS annual meeting.
