If your child has symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) or you would like to have a COVID-19 test for another reason, please call your child’s primary care provider. If it is determined that your child should have a test at Cincinnati Children's, your provider will put in an order. It is also possible that your provider may take a sample in their office and send it to us.

After the test is ordered, we ask that you wait two to three hours and then call the Scheduling Center at 513-517-2670 to make your appointment at a Cincinnati Children’s testing location.

Your options will be:

  • Burnet Campus (3333 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati OH 45229) – Go to main entrance, and follow signs for testing location.
  • Liberty Campus (7777 Yankee Road, Liberty Township, OH 45044) – Turn right at stop sign by the ED and follow road up and around the Proton Therapy Center to the parking lot that is visible from I-75.
  • Neighborhood locations – Look for signage when you arrive, park in a designated space and follow the instructions to let the lab team know you have arrived. Stay in your car, and a team member will be out to help you.
  • Anderson (7495 State Road, Cincinnati, OH 45255)
  • Green Township (5899 Harrison Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45248)
  • Mason (9560 Children’s Drive, Mason, OH 45040)
  • Northern Kentucky (2765 Chapel Place, Crestview Hills, KY 41017)
  • Medical Office Building (3430 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati OH 45229)

Burnet and Liberty have the largest capacity for tests each day and may be the only options available if the others have filled all appointments.

The Scheduling Center operates 7:30 am-5 pm Monday through Friday. After hours, you may connect with a provider via CincyKids Health Connect.

What to Expect When Your Child Is Being Tested for COVID-19

When you arrive at the testing location, you will either follow signs to a large white tent in a parking area, or you will follow signs to park in a designated space close to the building.

Neighborhood locations have a phone number to call when you park. At Burnet and Liberty locations, our team will be waiting there for you as you pull into the tent. Our staff will complete the test while you stay in your car at all locations, so do not get out of your car, even it if takes a couple of minutes for a team member to come outside to you.

Getting a test is uncomfortable and can sometimes be scary. Our care team is here to help and will be dressed to prevent the spread of germs. We may ask if your child prefers one nostril over the other. We may suggest your child sit on her hands to keep from helping. We may even ask if she would like to help count during the test.

The test requires a cotton swab that is inserted into the nose and swirled five times. Your child will feel pressure in her nose. Her eyes may water, and she may get a slight bloody nose after the test. After the test is finished, pull your car ahead and out of the testing line and you will be able to comfort your child. You can stay in your parked car for as long as you need.

Can We Go to the Emergency Department or Urgent Care for a Test?

What Is the Cost of a COVID-19 Test?

Cincinnati Children’s will bill your insurance for the cost of the COVID-19 test. There will be no out-of-pocket cost. The cost of the test is similar to other lab tests. There are no office visit charges associated with this cost.

How Long Will It Take to Get Results of a COVID-19 Test?

It takes about one to three days to get test results. Public health will notify you if your child’s test result is positive. If you have a MyChart account, test results will be posted there. If your child does not have a MyChart account, go online to request one.

Two days after the test, you may contact the provider who ordered the test to get results or seek additional advice on next steps. Please do not call the lab where you had the test or the Scheduling Center for results because they will not be able to give out such information. It is most important that you be in communication with your primary care provider.

If your child has symptoms, continue to have them self-quarantine.
