Caring for Your Child’s Physical, Mental and Behavioral Health Together

Your child’s health is about more than their physical well-being. Mental, emotional and behavioral health matter, too.

At Cincinnati Children’s primary care offices, integrated behavioral health specialists work alongside your child’s pediatric care team. Depending on the location, your child's care team may include licensed clinical counselors, licensed social workers or psychologists. This team approach makes it easier to get behavioral health support in the same familiar place you already trust for your child’s care.

Whether you want to learn how to promote your child’s emotional health, have a question about your child’s development or an everyday challenge, or are concerned about their mental health, you can start by talking with us.

What Is Integrated Behavioral Health?

Integrated behavioral health (IBH) brings pediatric mental and behavioral health services into your child’s primary care office.

Our behavioral health specialists work closely with your child’s primary care provider as one care team. Together, we consider your child’s developmental, physical, emotional and behavioral health and help your family find practical strategies that fit your needs.

You don’t have to wait until a concern becomes serious to ask for help. IBH can help families build healthy habits, address concerns early and get additional support when it’s needed.

How We Help Children and Families

Guidance for Growing and Developing

Children change quickly, and new stages can bring new questions. Our behavioral health specialists can help you understand your child’s development and find strategies that work for your family.

  • Understand your child’s development
  • Build positive routines and healthy habits
  • Strengthen your relationship with your child
  • Support your child’s emotional well-being
  • Help you meet the goals you have for your child and family
  • Navigate common parenting challenges
  • Address concerns before they become bigger problems

Our goal is to build on your family’s strengths and give you practical tools you can use in everyday life.

Skill Building and Therapy

When your child needs more support, our behavioral health specialists can help them develop skills to manage emotions, behaviors and other challenges.

  • Build coping and problem-solving skills
  • Manage difficult emotions or behaviors
  • Develop positive habits and routines
  • Reduce symptoms that interfere with everyday life
  • Support progress at home, at school and in the community

Depending on your child’s needs, behavioral health visits may take place in the primary care office or through telehealth.

What Can IBH Help With?

You can talk with your child’s primary care provider about any concerns you have about their emotions, behavior or development. You can also ask about meeting with an integrated behavioral health specialist.

  • Empowering you to be the caregiver you want to be
  • Anxiety, worries or fears
  • Sadness or depression
  • ADHD and behavior concerns
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Picky eating or feeding concerns
  • Potty training strategies or concerns
  • Stressful or traumatic experiences
  • Major life changes or adjustment challenges
  • School or academic concerns
  • Friendship and social challenges
  • Caregiver-child relationship challenges
  • Following medical treatment plans

A concern doesn’t have to feel serious before you ask for help. If you want support for your child or family, talk with us.

Behavioral Health Support as Part of Primary Care

When your child needs behavioral health support, finding the right care shouldn’t add more stress.

Our integrated behavioral health specialists are part of the primary care team. They can work directly with your child’s primary care provider to understand your concerns, coordinate care and decide what support may be most helpful.

For many families, this means getting help in a setting they already know and trust, without treating physical and behavioral health as separate needs.

If your child needs services beyond what we provide in primary care, our team can help determine the appropriate next steps.

How Do I Request an Appointment?

If you’re interested in IBH services, talk with your child’s Cincinnati Children’s primary care provider or contact your primary care office.

IBH is available at Cincinnati Children’s primary care locations. We offer IBH services at several non-Cincinnati Children’s locations.
