What to Look for in a Pediatrician

You want to give your kids the best life possible. We know there are a lot of decisions along the way – and finding a pediatric primary care provider is an important one.

Your chosen pediatrician should:

  • Give great medical care to your child
  • Track your child’s progress as they grow
  • Coordinate your child’s care across the healthcare system
  • Provide tools and resources that support you and your family
  • Answer your questions on a variety of child health topics in a way that you understand

Your Pediatrician Should Be:

Objective

We will make recommendations based on evidence and experience, and then work with you to make the best decisions for your child.

Attentive

We will listen carefully to you and to your child. And we will share the information you need to help meet your child’s needs for their best health and development.

Your Cheerleader

We will provide positive, caring support and encouragement for you, because we understand that parenting is hard.

When to Find a Pediatrician

You may be looking for a pediatrician because you’re a new or expecting parent, you moved, or your child’s former pediatrician retired. Whatever your reason, give yourself plenty of time to find the right fit.

If you’re expecting a new baby, we recommend looking for a pediatrician about three months before the baby is due. Most birthing hospitals will require you to give them your pediatrician’s name when the baby is born.

Choosing the Right Pediatrician for Your Family

Every family is different, just like every child is different. It’s important to understand your specific needs, so you can look for a provider who meets those needs. Here are a few guidelines to help:

Confirm the Location

Kids need to go to the doctor a LOT. Babies, before they turn one, have at least seven well baby visits, plus unexpected sick visits. You’re going to want a provider who is close – to home, daycare, school or work.

Check Your Insurance

Make sure your child’s pediatrician is in-network based on your health insurance coverage. Most insurance companies, including Medicaid, let you search for in-network providers through their websites.

Check Hours and Services

Read the services offered and the office hours of any pediatric practice you’re considering. What do they offer? When are they open?

Ask for Recommendations

Do family members, friends or co-workers have a pediatrician they recommend? Talking to others can be a helpful way to narrow your search. Ask them about their experiences and how they first chose their provider.

Look for Online Reviews

You can find lots of honest opinions from experienced parents about pediatric providers online. Read reviews and check ratings for pediatricians in your area.

Make Sure It's a Personality Fit

You and your child should get along with your pediatrician. Try to meet with them before your child’s first visit if you can. Many offices offer prenatal consults, so you can tour the space and see the provider before your child is born.
