Driving Innovation in Digital Training to Transform Patient Care

We are uniquely positioned at Cincinnati Children's to harness content expertise and software development talents to facilitate rapid prototyping of digital-based training programs. We work closely with the Center for Simulation Research to develop these innovative programs.

Prior interventions led by Drs. Zackoff and Real have demonstrated effectiveness with measurable patient-level outcomes and notable scholarly outputs (e.g., NIH-level funding, peer reviewed publications, national presentations). We have been deliberate in our approach to leverage digital based training solutions by considering the following critical steps:

  1. Identifying problems not addressed through current approaches (e.g., traditional QI methods or BMI support)
  2. Characterizing the knowledge, skill, or behavior deficit that underlies the problem
  3. Designing education interventions anchored in adult-learning and behavior change theories
  4. Capturing meaningful outcomes to demonstrate effectiveness to justify sustainability and spread

The portfolio of work completed by our team is broad and diverse with demonstrated effectiveness in addressing vaccine hesitancy, behavioral health counseling, shared decision making, firearm injury prevention, clinical assessment and management, and timely escalation of care in addition to others.

Work With Us

The team is actively seeking collaboration to spread established content to new sites or populations and partner with content experts to design digital training interventions that would support enhancing care and improving outcomes aligned with prevention of critical illness. The team additionally has experience with and interest in partnering with industry to support scale and spread of effective interventions.

Clinical Deterioration

Several studies focused on the use of VR/AR to train clinicians on the recognition of pediatric clinical deterioration to impact care at the bedside and improve patient outcomes. Work to date has focused on validating/refining training experiences for different populations of healthcare providers and exploring the use of VR for assessment of skills for respiratory failure and sepsis.
