Alister Bates, PhD

I am an associate professor of pediatrics within the Division of Pulmonary Medicine. My research focuses on human airways and how they change with various disease conditions. I am interested in airway behavior in children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and premature babies born with tracheomalacia (TM) and congenital abnormalities. I have over eight years of experience applying airflow knowledge to human airways, and I’ve worked at Cincinnati Children’s for over three years.

Christopher Boles

I am a Biomedical Engineering PhD student at the University of Cincinnati. I received a bachelor's in computer engineering at the University of Colorado. My research interests are utilizing data analysis and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to examine the respiratory system. Outside of research, I love to travel, roller skate, and go to the gym.

Chamindu Gunatilaka, PhD

I am a research fellow in the Division of Pulmonary Medicine and CPIR. I received my PhD in physics from the University of Cincinnati in May 2021. My current research investigates breathing energy and drug delivery in neonates using ultrashort echo-time (UTE) MRI and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Besides research, I enjoy photography and playing cricket.

Hamideh Hayati
Research Fellow

Qiwei Xiao, PhD

I am a research fellow in the Division of Pulmonary Medicine and CPIR. I graduated with a PhD from the aeronautical department of Imperial College London in May 2019. My current research interests are investigating human upper airway neuromuscular activities for subjects with sleep apnea using cine MRI and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) as well as applying convolutional neural networks for MR image classification and segmentation. Apart from research, I am also interested in body building and photography.
