Comprehensive Care for Children with Asthma

When your child struggles to breathe, every cough, wheeze or flare-up can feel stressful. Families often have questions about what is causing symptoms and how to keep asthma under control. At Cincinnati Children’s Asthma Center, we help families better understand asthma and create a clear plan for care.

Our specialists treat asthma of all severities in children of every age. We care for exercise-induced asthma, recurrent wheezing, and exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (vocal cord dysfunction). We also lead research studies and clinical trials that help improve care and expand treatment options for children with difficult-to-treat asthma.

Families benefit from care shaped by research, shared expertise and leadership that influences practice across the U.S. and beyond.

Asthma Care Built Around Your Child’s Needs

Nationally Recognized Asthma Research

The Asthma Center is part of the Division of Pulmonary Medicine which is ranked #2 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Our team is helping shape the future of pediatric asthma care. The Asthma Center is led by Theresa W. Guilbert, MD, MS, a nationally and internationally recognized leader in asthma research and treatment.

As a research hospital, Cincinnati Children’s may offer access to clinical trials and new therapies that are not widely available. This connection between research and patient care helps families access the latest advances in asthma treatment.

Coordinated Care for Complex Asthma

Children with severe or difficult-to-control asthma may need support from several specialists. Our center brings together pulmonologists, allergists, behavioral medicine specialists, social workers, and registered dietitians.

This team-based care approach helps families receive coordinated recommendations during one visit. Families leave with one clear plan focused on improving symptoms and daily life.

Personalized Treatment For Every Child

No two children experience asthma the same way. We build personalized care plans based on your child’s symptoms, triggers, testing results and daily activities.

Our team offers advanced testing, including lung function testing, exercise challenge testing and exhaled nitric oxide testing. These tools help us better understand airway inflammation and guide treatment decisions. We also offer chest X-rays, lung CT scans and sleep studies when additional testing is needed.

Experience Families Can Trust

Our Asthma Center cares for nearly 2,000 patients each year, including children with mild, moderate and severe asthma. We are deeply involved in quality improvement efforts focused on helping children breathe better and stay healthier.

Families also value the care and support they receive from our team. We work closely with parents and caregivers so they feel informed, heard and confident in their child’s treatment plan.
