What Are the Benefits of Getting a Bone Marrow Transplantation Second Opinion?
Many families seek a second opinion to confirm a diagnosis or treatment plan. Others come to us because their child has a rare condition, symptoms continue despite treatment, a disease has progressed or they want to explore additional treatment options.
Children with bone marrow failure syndromes, immune deficiencies, hemoglobin disorders and complex cancers often require highly specialized evaluation. In some cases, additional testing may help clarify a diagnosis or identify the most appropriate treatment approach. Cincinnati Children’s specialists routinely evaluate children with complex and difficult-to-diagnose conditions and collaborate across specialties to develop individualized recommendations.
As a leading pediatric academic medical center, we provide access to specialized diagnostic evaluation, multidisciplinary expertise and innovative treatment approaches for children with complex blood, immune system and transplant-related conditions. Whether confirming your current treatment plan or identifying additional options, our goal is to help your family find the best path forward.
How Do I Get a Bone Marrow Transplantation and Immune Deficiency Second Opinion?
There are several ways you can request a second opinion with one of our Bone Marrow Transplantation and Immune Deficiency specialists:
- Fill out our online contact form. In the “Requesting” field, choose “Requesting a Second Opinion” from the drop-down menu.
- Call us to schedule an appointment.
- Ask your primary care doctor or specialist for a referral. They can contact our team and help begin the second opinion process.
What Can I Expect During the Second Opinion Process?
Our referral coordinators will collect information about your child’s diagnosis, symptoms and medical history. We will help gather relevant medical records, including laboratory results, imaging studies, pathology reports, procedure reports and previous treatment information.
Before your appointment, our specialists review the records and information provided by your child’s current physicians. Depending on your child’s condition, additional testing or consultations with other specialists may be recommended.
During your visit, our team will review your child’s diagnosis, discuss previous evaluations and treatments, and answer your questions. We will explain our recommendations and discuss all appropriate treatment options.
For children with complex conditions such as bone marrow failure syndromes, immune deficiencies, hemoglobin disorders or cancers being considered for transplant, the evaluation may include input from multiple specialists to ensure your family receives a comprehensive assessment.
Following the evaluation, we will provide a care plan and discuss where recommended treatment can be received, whether at Cincinnati Children’s, closer to home or through a combination of both. For many families, we also share recommendations with the referring physician to support ongoing care.
If your family chooses to receive care at Cincinnati Children’s, the same team can continue to guide and support you throughout treatment.
Do I Need to Bring Anything With Me?
Our team will work to obtain your child’s medical records before your appointment. However, we recommend bringing any records, imaging studies or test results you already have available.
Please also bring:
- Insurance card(s)
- Current medication list
- Custody paperwork or power of attorney documents (if applicable)
- A list of questions you would like answered during the visit
