Expert Guidance for Children Facing Cancer or Cancer Risk

A new cancer diagnosis can bring many questions for your family. You may also have concerns about cancer risk because of your family history or your child’s health.

The Cancer Predisposition Program at Cincinnati Children’s helps families understand when genetics may play a role in cancer. We provide genetic counseling and testing for children and young adults with a new cancer diagnosis, known cancer predisposition syndromes or a strong family history of cancer.

Our team also evaluates children with complex health concerns that may suggest a cancer predisposition syndrome. We bring together experts in genetics, oncology and other specialties to help families understand their child’s risk and next steps.

Why Choose Cincinnati Children’s Cancer Predisposition Program?

  • Team-based care brings genetics, oncology and other specialists together to create a coordinated plan for your child
  • Personalized genetic evaluation helps explain how your child’s cancer, health history or family history may affect their cancer risk
  • Dedicated nurse coordinator helps manage scheduling, surveillance and communication across the care team
  • Expert second opinions give families another perspective when a diagnosis, genetic finding or cancer risk is complex

Cancer Predisposition Expertise for Children

Nationally Recognized Cancer Program

Cincinnati Children’s is ranked No. 2 in the nation for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report. This national recognition reflects the depth of expertise, research and coordinated care available to children and young adults with cancer.

That expertise also strengthens care for patients whose cancer may be linked to an underlying genetic condition or predisposition.

Experience With Rare Conditions

Our Cancer Predisposition Program cares for children and young adults with rare tumors and cancer predisposition syndromes.

Some conditions can be difficult to recognize or diagnose, especially when a child’s medical history does not follow a typical pattern. Our team takes time to review each patient’s history, test results and other medical information to help families better understand what may be contributing to their child’s cancer risk and what steps to consider next.

Multiple Experts, One Coordinated Plan

Cancer predisposition can involve many areas of a child’s health. Our specialists work closely across genetics, oncology, endocrinology, radiology, pathology, gastrointestinal medicine and surgery.

Many patients can see multiple experts through a coordinated clinic experience. A dedicated nurse coordinator helps families manage appointments, surveillance and communication across the care team.

Second Opinions for Complex Cases

Families may come to our program for another perspective on a cancer diagnosis, genetic finding or possible cancer predisposition syndrome. Our specialists review complex cases and help families understand their options and next steps by providing expert second opinions.

Adult Patients

The Cancer Predisposition Program cares for patients from birth through age 25. We help support a seamless transition to adult care teams like our Hereditary Cancer Program when needed.
