Expert Second Opinions for Cancer Predisposition

Cincinnati Children’s offers second opinions for children and young adults with cancer, increased cancer risk or concerns about a cancer predisposition syndrome.

An expert second opinion can provide clarity when a diagnosis, genetic finding or cancer risk is complex. Our team can help you understand your child’s diagnosis, review available information and discuss possible next steps.

The Cancer Predisposition Program cares for patients from birth through age 25. Our specialists have experience with rare tumors, cancer predisposition syndromes and complex cases without a confirmed genetic diagnosis.

Our Cancer Predisposition Program offers second opinions for concerns including:

  • New cancer diagnoses
  • Known cancer predisposition syndromes
  • Strong family history of cancer
  • Suspected cancer predisposition
  • Complex or rare tumors
  • Genetic findings that may affect cancer risk

What Are the Benefits of Getting a Cancer Predisposition Second Opinion?

Many families seek another opinion when they have questions about a diagnosis or genetic finding. Others want help understanding whether cancer may be linked to an inherited risk.

Our team reviews your child’s medical history, cancer history, family history and test results. We also bring together specialists from genetics, oncology and other fields when needed.

Cincinnati Children’s cancer program is ranked No. 2 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. This expertise supports care for children and young adults with cancer and complex cancer-related concerns.

Our specialists help families understand their options and determine what questions to address next.

How Do I Get a Cancer Predisposition Second Opinion?

There are several ways to request a second opinion with our Cancer Predisposition Program:

  • Call us to schedule an appointment. Call 513-517-2234 to speak with our team.
  • Ask your child’s doctor for a referral. Your doctor can contact Cincinnati Children’s to begin the process.

What Can I Expect During the Second Opinion Process?

Our team will review information about your child’s diagnosis, medical history and cancer risk. We may also review genetic test results, family history and other medical records.

Before the appointment, our specialists review the information available to us. If your child’s case involves several areas of medicine, we may involve other specialists.

During the appointment, our team will discuss your child’s diagnosis and concerns. We will explain what the available information may mean and answer your questions.

For complex cases, care may involve specialists in genetics, oncology, endocrinology, radiology, pathology, gastrointestinal medicine and surgery. This team-based care helps bring different areas of expertise together.

After the evaluation, our team will discuss recommendations and next steps. These may include genetic counseling, genetic testing, cancer risk assessment or ongoing surveillance when appropriate.
