Neuromuscular Cardiology
Treatments and Services

Experts in Treating Heart Problems Related to Neuromuscular Disease

We offer advanced, personalized cardiac care for individuals with neuromuscular disease, as well as for female genetic carriers of these conditions. In partnership with the Comprehensive Neuromuscular Center, our internationally recognized cardiomyopathy and heart failure teams provide world-class care to patients from across the globe. Together, we form one of the largest and most distinguished programs dedicated to heart complications related to neuromuscular disease.

Integrated Heart and Lung Care

Our unique, multidisciplinary approach ensures that heart and lung systems are treated together—crucial for managing the complex progression of neuromuscular disease. Patients meet with both pulmonologists and cardiologists during the same appointment, ensuring cohesive care and consistent communication across specialties. This integrated model helps delay the onset of heart and lung failure, improving both quality and length of life.

Support Into Young Adulthood

We continue to provide care after patients turn 18, helping them transition smoothly from pediatric to adult care. This continuity is critical for long-term outcomes and ensures that no aspect of care is lost as patients age.

Advanced Treatments We Offer

Medications

Treatment plans are based on your individual cardiac findings. Therapies often include oral medications such as:

  • Oral heart failure therapies
  • Beta-blockers
  • Diuretics
  • Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists

These medications help manage symptoms, slow disease progression, and support heart function.

Pacemakers and Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators

For patients with arrhythmias or advanced disease, pacemakers and ICDs may be recommended to regulate heart rhythm and prevent sudden cardiac arrest.

Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) and Total Artificial Heart (TAH)

For appropriate patients with advanced heart failure, we offer mechanical circulatory support, including LVADs and total artificial heart technology.

In 2012, our team performed what is believed to be the first successful LVAD implantation in a patient with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in the USA. Since then, we’ve completed several additional procedures, offering new hope and extending the lives of patients who previously had limited options.

Genetic Testing and Counseling

We provide comprehensive genetic counseling and screening for family members at risk of developing heart conditions related to neuromuscular disease.
