Expert, Minimally Invasive PDA Treatment in Preterm Infants
At Cincinnati Children’s, we know preterm babies are some of our most fragile patients. That’s why we offer minimally invasive treatment for newborns with PDA. The providers in our Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) Closure Program for Preterm Infants perform transcatheter device closure to seal your baby’s open blood vessel without surgery.
How the Procedure Works
Transcatheter device closure is a catheter-based procedure. That means we won’t make any incisions. Instead, one of our pediatric interventional cardiologists inserts a small catheter into one of your baby’s blood vessels. Using X-ray and echo guidance, they thread the catheter to the PDA and use specialized tools to place a device made of nitinol (soft wire mesh) to permanently close the PDA.
The procedure typically takes approximately two hours to complete. Once it’s complete, your baby will return to the NICU for recovery.
Devices Designed for Very Small Babies
Performing procedures on preterm infants requires specialized equipment. To complete a transcatheter device closure, our experts use customized tools that are designed for patients who only weigh a few pounds.
Care in Our NICU
When your newborn comes to our NICU for PDA treatment, they need gentle, supportive care. Our cardiology and neonatology teams blend warmth and expertise as they monitor your baby to ensure they have a safe, stable recovery.
