Patent Ductus Arteriosus
What to Expect

What to Expect with the Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) Closure Program for Preterm Infants

If your baby is referred to Cincinnati Children’s for evaluation or treatment of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), our team will work closely with your baby’s NICU team to coordinate care.

From consultation through recovery, our compassionate cardiology, neonatology and NICU specialists collaborate to ensure safe, efficient treatment.

Before the Procedure

As a first step, your baby’s NICU team will need to contact us for a consultation. To determine if your newborn needs transcatheter device closure, we will review their:

  • Breathing and feeding status
  • Echocardiograms and imaging
  • Medical records
  • Overall recovery in the NICU

Transport to Cincinnati Children’s

If we believe your child would benefit from treatment, our neonatal transport team will coordinate safe transfer from the referring hospital. Our NICU nurses, respiratory therapists and doctors are experts in making sure your child has continuous care while they move between hospitals.

On the Day of the Procedure

Once your baby arrives in our nationally ranked NICU, we will perform their transcatheter device closure within one to two days. We complete these minimally invasive procedures in our state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab.

After the Procedure

After the procedure, our doctors use imaging tests to confirm the device is properly placed and that your baby’s blood flow has improved. We will closely monitor your newborn while they recover in our NICU.

If no complications arise, we can transfer your baby to your referring NICU within 48 hours. Our goal is to help your newborn fully recover close to home.

Supporting Families

We know it can be overwhelming when your baby needs specialized heart care. From referral to treatment to recovery, we will be by your side. Delivering the coordinated, compassionate care your infant needs is our top priority.
