Financial Considerations

Resources to Reduce Stress and Simplify the Medical Billing Process

When your child needs medical care, you should be able to focus on his or her emotional and physical needs above all else. At the Proton Therapy Center, we are committed to helping reduce your stress by simplifying the medical billing process.

Two people on our team will help you navigate the financial considerations you may face:

  • Proton therapy billing specialist: Our billing specialist works with your insurance carrier on the preauthorization of proton therapy treatment and will keep you informed throughout the authorization process. This billing specialist is available to answer any questions you may have about insurance or billing related to proton therapy.
  • Financial counselor: A counselor can talk to you about your questions or concerns related to any financial aspect of your child’s care (beyond insurance coverage). To contact the financial counselor, call 513-803-6500 or email FFA@cchmc.org.

FAQs: Paying for Proton Therapy

Proton therapy is more expensive than traditional radiation therapy. This is largely because of the costs associated with buying and operating the sophisticated equipment required for treatment delivery.

Most private and government-sponsored insurance providers cover proton therapy for many types of childhood cancer. If your health insurance does not preauthorize your child’s therapy, our billing specialist will facilitate an appeals process on your behalf. If needed, a financial counselor will guide you through the financial resources that are available to you, in addition to or as an alternative to your health insurance.

Even if your insurance provider authorizes your child’s proton therapy, you may face out-of-pocket costs. Your financial obligations will vary depending on factors such as what your plan benefits include, the amount of your co-pay or deductible and whether you have met your deductible.

If you have any concerns about meeting your financial obligations, we encourage you to contact one of our financial counselors. To reach a financial counselor, call 513-803-6500 or email FFA@cchmc.org.

Our guest services team assists families who travel from outside our region for proton therapy. These specialists can provide:

  • Complimentary shuttle service to and from area airports to Cincinnati Children’s
  • Lodging arrangements at a discounted rate, for both short and extended stays
  • Complimentary tickets to local attractions
