Curriculum

The Neonatal Neurology Fellowship provides one year of additional clinical training focusing on the recognition and management of neurological diseases that affect the fetus, neonates and infants.

It is our goal to prepare physicians to practice independently and provide expert clinical care in common and uncommon disorders affecting the nervous system and to engage in scholarship through supervised training in the following areas:

  • Diagnosis and management of neurological diseases that affect the neonate
  • Management of neonatal infantile epilepsies, neuromuscular disorders, genetic disorders and metabolic diseases
  • Diagnosis and management of neurological disorders manifesting in fetal period
  • Technical aspects and interpretation of procedures related to the practice of neonatal neurology including amplitude integrated EEG, conventional EEG, head ultrasound, and  MRI
  • Neurological exam of the preterm and term neonate
  • Administrative, management, and economic aspects of neonatal neurology

Neonatal Neurology
Neonatal seizures, encephalopathy (including hypoxic-ischemic and metabolic), neuromuscular disorders (hypotonia, weakness, and arthrogryposis), stroke, brain malformations, infection, drug withdrawal, trauma, periventricular leukomalacia, and germinal matrix hemorrhage.

Fetal Neurology
Abnormalities of fetal brain development including agenesis of the corpus callosum, absent septum pellucidum, holoprosencephaly, schizencephaly, cortical migration anomalies, posterior fossa abnormalities such as Dandy Walker spectrum, rhombencephalosynapsis, cerebellar hypoplasias and dysgenesis, disorders of spinal fluid dynamics including ventriculomegaly, hydrocephalus and congenital aqueductal stenosis and other fetal pathologies suggestive of involvement of the nervous system such as arthrogryposis, and decreased fetal movement.

28 Weeks: Neurology consults in the NICU (Cincinnati Children’s, Good Samaritan Hospital, UC), Kettering (via telemedicine) and Fetal Consults

8 Weeks: Clinical Neurophysiology

2 Clinics/Week: Neonatal Neurology Clinic

2 Clinics/Week: Infantile Epilepsy Clinic

4 Weeks: Neuroradiology

8 Weeks: Elective
This elective period will be tailored to meet individual candidate interests. Further sub-specialized training can be obtained in the following areas:

  • Neurometabolic, Neurogenetics and Infantile Epilepsy Clinics: 3 days/week with 2 days reserved for scholarly activity
  • Neurophysiology training in interpreting neonatal EEGs and engage in research and scholarly activity in this area
  • Fetal Neurology: participate in fetal consults and engage in scholarly activity in this area
  • Participation in NICU rounds: spend time with neonatology and gain exposure to neonatal medicine and management of neonates with complicated medical and surgical conditions
  • Pediatric neurology grand rounds (monthly)
  • Neuroradiology conference (weekly)
  • Not just neurology (weekly)
  • Pharmacology lecture series (weekly)
  • Combined neonatology and neurology lecture series (4 per year)
  • Neonatal EEG lecture series (monthly)
  • Neonatal neurology case review (monthly)
