Improving Maternal and Newborn Health in Greater Cincinnati and Beyond

We are committed to improving health and outcomes of all mothers and babies in the Greater Cincinnati Region. We lead several initiatives that help identify and close perinatal care gaps, educate local care providers, and ultimately reduce perinatal mortality and morbidity.

Since its founding in 2009, the Perinatal Institute at Cincinnati Children’s has built strong collaborations to improve newborn health locally, regionally, and globally.

Lowering Infant Mortality

Cincinnati Children's clinicians work with obstetricians to transfer mothers in preterm labor before 32 weeks to Level III centers, greatly reducing risks of newborn death and complications. As a result, about 90% of these high-risk births in our region now occur in Level III centers, keeping mothers and babies together.

Cradle Cincinnati: Because every baby deserves to celebrate their first birthday.

As a collective impact collaborative, Cradle Cincinnati brings together community members and organizations across sectors — healthcare, social services, government and more — to measurably improve Hamilton County, Ohio’s infant mortality rate and eliminate racial inequities in the health of moms and babies.

Founded in 2013 by top doctors at Cincinnati Children's and University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Cradle Cincinnati offers programs that support mothers, babies and families through pregnancy and beyond while advancing equitable maternal and infant health. Through community resources, peer support, professional education and policy advocacy, these initiatives help families thrive and equip healthcare professionals to provide the best possible care.

Preventing Premature Births

Prematurity is a leading cause of infant mortality. We partner with TriHealth, University of Cincinnati Medical Center, local health departments, and community organizations to address prematurity at its roots through targeted, neighborhood-based programs in Butler County, downtown Cincinnati, Fay Apartments, and Price Hill.

Advancing Health Equity for Mothers and Babies

We believe all mothers and babies should receive equal opportunities to be as healthy as possible. Our multi-disciplinary team of physicians, social workers, data scientists, and quality improvement and community engagement specialists are working with local families to understand and address the factors that impact infant survival and development.

Working with Community Physicians

Our neonatologists work closely with OB/GYNs and healthcare providers across the region, identifying fetal health concerns early and planning interventions before birth. We are on site in most area hospitals, available to attend high-risk deliveries, and committed to ensuring the safest possible care for mothers and infants.

Perinatal Outreach and Education

The Cincinnati Children’s Perinatal Outreach Program (CCPOP) delivers education, training, and consultation to perinatal healthcare providers throughout the Tri-State region.

Public Health Collaborations

We support the Fetal Infant Mortality Review Committee, led by the Cincinnati and Hamilton County health departments, to investigate causes of preterm birth and develop strategies to reduce infant deaths.
