Planned giving pays it forward to next generation

Staff Bulletin.Sometimes, life lands you right where you need to be. For Sue Poynter, MD, MEd, director of the Pediatric Residency Training Program and medical director of the Division of Respiratory Care, that place was Cincinnati Children’s.

“This June, I’ll celebrate 20 years at Cincinnati Children’s,” Poynter says. “Choosing to do my residency here remains one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

Fresh out of medical school, Poynter came to Cincinnati Children’s to learn about complex pediatric conditions, training she knew would be valuable to her as she prepared for a career as a community pediatrician.

After her residency, though, Poynter realized she wanted to remain at Cincinnati Children’s. She applied for and accepted a critical care fellowship at the medical center. And she’s been here ever since.

“Your residency is what defines you as a doctor,” she says. “For me, it made me realize Cincinnati Children’s is where I wanted to be. It also inspired me to give back.”

Recently, Poynter met with her attorney to plan her estate, and he asked her an important question: “Who has been important in your life?” She discovered that one of her answers wasn’t a person – it was Cincinnati Children’s.

“Cincinnati Children’s hasn’t only given me a great job that I love,” Poynter pauses. “The medical center helped me to become who I am today, and I want other young clinicians to have those same opportunities.”

That’s why she chose to make a gift in her will to support the general medical education program at Cincinnati Children’s. “I want the medical center to remain one of the top destinations for new pediatric residents,” Poynter says. “I also want to make sure that we are able to provide the next generation of pediatricians with the best training and resources available.”

To Poynter, there is no more fitting way to show her gratitude to the place that set her on her path than to leave a planned gift. “Whatever we give back perpetuates the next great initiative in education – and that’s what I want to happen at Cincinnati Children’s,” says Poynter.
