Moore Research Lab

Our laboratory at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is dedicated to advancing research in gut health, nutrition, immunity, and host-microbe interactions. Led by Dr. Sean R. Moore, MD, MS, the Mitchell B. Cohen Professor of Pediatrics and Division Director of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, we focus on uncovering the molecular mechanisms that drive gastrointestinal physiology and disease, undernutrition, and health outcomes in children. Our goal is to explore how maintaining a healthy gut can be fundamental in preventing diseases, enhancing nutrition, and promoting lifelong wellness.

Our Research Focus

We aim to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of pediatric gastrointestinal disorders through cutting-edge basic, translational, and clinical research.

Our areas of expertise include:

  • Environmental Enteric Dysfunction & Undernutrition – Understanding the gut’s role in childhood stunting and undernutrition worldwide
  • Diarrheal Disease – With a focus on stunting-associated pathogens
  • Microbiome-Host Interactions – Studying the gut microbiome’s influence on digestion, immunity, and disease
  • Intestinal Organoids– Developing innovative 4-dimensional models and tools to study GI function and disease

Current Projects

  • Intestinal Adaption in Pregnancy and Lactation – Studying small intestinal structural and functional dynamics in the context of pregnancy, lactation, and inflammation
  • Circadian Rhythms in Gut Health – Understanding how biological clocks influence GI function and disease

Our Approach

Our lab is committed to a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach to pediatric gastroenterology research. We integrate:

  • Clinical studies to improve pediatric patient care
  • Basic science using murine models and intestinal organoid technology
  • Global health research with partners in Brazil and Pakistan
  • Systems biology and AI-driven analytics for personalized medicine

We welcome learning more about the fellows, students, and researchers in our lab who are advancing the science of pediatric gastroenterology, nutrition, and microbiome at one of the nation’s top pediatric research institutions.
