End-stage Lung Failure Program

Treatments and Services

Treatment for End-stage Lung Failure is never “one size fits all.” Our team will provide a unified treatment plan that may include one or more of the following:

  • Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). A form of life support used for babies, children and adults with life-threatening heart and/or lung problems.
    • Veno-arterial (VA) ECMO does the work of both the heart and lungs.
    • Veno-venous (VV) ECMO does the work of just the lungs.
  • Paracorporeal Lung Assist Device (PLAD). Devices that can safely bridge children from ECMO to recovery or transplant. We use an innovative approach that allows long-term rehabilitation in the setting of combined respiratory and right ventricle failure.
  • Potts Shunt Operation
  • Medical Management. We take innovative approaches to medication management of allosensitized patients to optimize candidacy to lung and heart-lung transplantation.
  • Physical, nutritional and emotional rehabilitation.

In addition, we have a renowned Lung Transplant Program and perform multi-organ transplants, including heart-lung, heart-lung-kidney, and heart-lung-liver transplants.

Our services also include consults on cases from afar. We regularly work with providers in other states to assess patient cases and evaluate them for collaborative care remotely or for possible transport to Cincinnati.
