Children with hypoglycemia often need expert evaluation and a treatment plan tailored to their condition. Cincinnati Children’s provides comprehensive care for children with hypoglycemia, hyperinsulinism and related disorders.

Our team offers both diagnostic services and long-term management options. Families can also request second opinions and consultations. Our program serves as one of only three centers in the United States and one of eight internationally dedicated to this area of care.

Diagnostic Testing

We use specialized testing to understand why your child is experiencing low blood sugar. Services include:

  • Hypoglycemia fasting studies
  • FDOPA PET/CT scans for children with hyperinsulinism
  • Comprehensive evaluations for rare causes of hypoglycemia

Medical Treatments

Treatment plans depend on your child's diagnosis and age. Common therapies include:

  • Diazoxide treatment
  • Octreotide treatment
  • Combination medication trials using diazoxide and octreotide
  • Cornstarch therapy and individualized feeding plans

Surgical Care

Some children with severe hyperinsulinism may benefit from surgery. Our team offers:
