Research Highlights
Through innovation and collaboration, we are learning more about hypoglycemia and our findings are helping us support more individuals living with hyperinsulinism. Current research includes:
- Mapping the pancreas to improve treatment for hyperinsulinism: Why do some children have a small area of abnormal insulin production (focal), while others have insulin overproduction throughout the pancreas (diffuse)? Our team is studying pancreatic tissue from children with focal and diffuse hyperinsulinism to understand these differences. By combining advanced tissue analysis with cutting-edge spatial transcriptomics, we are creating detailed maps of the pancreas that reveal why the pancreas secretes too much insulin. This work will move us closer to more personalized treatments for children with hyperinsulinism.
- Uncovering new genetic causes of hyperinsulinism: Approximately half of children with congenital hyperinsulinism do not have an identified genetic cause. Our team is searching for new genes that can explain why insulin-producing cells release too much insulin. By combining advanced genetic approaches with studies of patient tissue, we are discovering new causes of hyperinsulinism.
- Using pancreatic organoids to develop better treatments: The Wells Lab is creating laboratory models of the human pancreas. These organoid models allow us to study why insulin-producing cells release too much insulin and test new treatments before they are considered for children with hyperinsulinism. This approach helps us discover safer, targeted therapies for children with hyperinsulinism.
- Understanding pancreatic development to uncover causes of congenital pancreatic disorders: The Takebe Lab is uncovering how the human pancreas is built, from its earliest progenitor cells to mature insulin-producing cells. By studying developmental pathways that shape the pancreas, this research is revealing how disruptions in pancreatic development contribute to congenital hyperinsulinism, opening new avenues for therapy.
