Services

Support Services Provided

  • Therapeutic administration of medical gases including oxygen, nitrogen, nitric oxide, carbon dioxide and helium / oxygen mixtures 
  • Treatment procedures to include aerosol therapy (continuous, intermittent or metered dose), percussion and postural drainage, cough assist, chest physical therapy (CPT) and airway clearance techniques, assessment, education, percussive ventilator, assist with bronchoscopies, incentive spirometry and breathing exercises (includes patient and parent instruction), disease management and smoking cessation. Initiation of IV access
  • Ventilatory support procedures to include initiation and management of mechanical ventilation, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP); bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP), high flow nasal cannula (HFNC), postsurgical airway care and suctioning (includes parent instruction  for home care)
  • Assembly, inspection and troubleshooting of all respiratory care equipment
  • Diagnostic procedures to include: blood gas analysis (capillary, venipuncture and arterial puncture), pulse oximetry, end tidal CO2 measurements, metabolic studies and bedside spirometry
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation including emergency intubation and parent teaching
  • Transportation of neonatal and pediatric patients to and from procedures throughout Cincinnati Children’s

The Cincinnati Children’s Emergency Departments at  the Burnet Campus and the Liberty Campus are staffed 24 / 7 by registered therapists and provide the following treatment procedures:

    • Aerosol therapy (intermittent and metered dose)
    • Percussion and postural drainage, chest physical therapy
    • Incentive spirometry and breathing exercises (includes patient and parent instruction).
    • Diagnostic procedures, including  blood gas analysis, transcutaneous PO2 and PCO2 measurements, and pulse oximetry.

The Pulmonary Diagnostic Lab is staffed by respiratory care practitioners who are dual credentialed in respiratory care and pulmonary function studies. Hours are 8 am-5 pm Monday through Friday;  after hours by appointment. Services include:

  • Pulmonary function studies
  • Administration of diagnostic gases
  • Methacholine challenge
  • Metabolic studies
  • Simple exercise studies assistance with bronchoscopies.

The Pulmonary Diagnostic Lab personnel also provide services to the Pulmonary Clinic. Procedures include:

  • Basic pulmonary function testing
  • Aerosol therapy and pulse oximetry.
  • Disease management 

Patient and parent instruction is provided for metered dose inhalers (MDI), aerosol and CPT therapies, flutter valve, PEP mask and other airway clearance maneuvers.

The Sleep Lab provides sleep studies 24 / 7 by professionals dual credentialed in respiratory care and sleep diagnostics.  Under the medical direction of a certified sleep pulmonologist, diagnostic procedures are performed to determine the extent of the apnea and the initiation and titration of CPAP / BiPAP.

The Transport Team is staffed 24 / 7 with a team consisting of an RRT and an RN. These individuals are responsible for the transport of critical patients to and from the medical center. Ambulances are equipped to provide the same care that is available in our intensive care units including all medical gases.

Respiratory therapists in the Home Care/DME Department offer the following
services:

  • Home nebulizer setup
  • AeroChambers / peak flow / PEP therapy / acapella
  • Stationary and portable suction units
  • Humidified tracheostomy setups
  • Apnea monitoring
  • Stationary and portable oxygen setups
  • Oximetry
  • Continuous esophageal suction

Emergency Departments

Our Emergency Departments at  the Burnet Campus and Liberty Campus are staffed 24 / 7 by registered therapists.
