As an attending physician, I'm drawn to all aspects of neonatology, particularly periviable care (care for infants at the earliest gestational ages), with an emphasis on shared decision-making. I am committed to partnering with families, whatever their background or circumstances. Prematurity disproportionately affects certain groups and yet touches all. I help ensure families feel empowered to participate in caring for their infant along with the medical team. I am also interested in medical education.
A friend and mentor inspired me to become a neonatologist. He is an excellent teacher, and I had a "right place, right time" moment with him that showed me the complexities of the specialty. Neonatology affords a "hands-on" ability to address problems in patient care. I also enjoy getting to know patients' families in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Fundamental to care in the NICU is being a great listener. My care approach for families is rooted in compassionate and active listening. Before developing a plan for their infant, you must first understand each family's unique story and the circumstances that led them to you.
Despite the agreement that parents and neonatology providers should engage in a shared decision-making approach to care for periviable resuscitations, we also need to understand the specific factors that parents identify as important to this decision-making process. As a researcher, I'm working to identify the factors birthing parents use to make decisions about periviable resuscitation. I hope to recommend to neonatologists and neonatology fellows how best to conduct these consults with a more compassionate and family-centered approach.
When I'm not working, I love to travel with my fiancé, internationally and domestically. We love discovering new things about the world around us. We have a cat and a dog. We listen to the Las Culturistas podcast weekly and enjoy seeing new movies.
