What Is a Tympanic Membrane Perforation?
A tympanic membrane perforation is a hole or tear in the eardrum. The eardrum is a small, thin piece of tissue that separates the outer ear from the middle ear. Its job is to help transmit sound to the inner ear and protect the middle ear from infection and debris.
This condition is also called a ruptured eardrum. It can happen in one or both ears. Many times, a hole can heal on its own.
