Cincinnati Children’s Ranked Among Nation’s Best by U.S. News

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center ranks third in the nation among all Honor Roll hospitals in U.S. News and World Report’s 2011 Best Children’s Hospitals ranking.

Cincinnati Children’s is the only hospital in Ohio to make the Honor Roll list and one of only 11 in the United States. The Honor Roll includes hospitals that excel in at least four of the 10 specialties ranked.

Cincinnati Children’s is ranked in the top 10 for all pediatric specialties – a distinction shared only by Children’s Hospital Boston and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The specialties and Cincinnati Children’s rank are:

• Pulmonology 2
• Nephrology 3
• Neonatology 3
• Urology 4
• Cancer 5
• Orthopedics 5
• Diabetes & Endocrinology 6
• Neurology & Neurosurgery 8
• Cardiology & Heart Surgery 9

The higher a hospital’s score, the more Honor Roll points it receives. Cincinnati Children’s received 16 points, behind only Boston and Philadelphia, which received 20 points each.

The new rankings recognize 50 children’s hospitals in 10 specialties. Seventy-six hospitals are ranked in at least one specialty.

Now in its fifth year, Best Children’s Hospitals pulls together clinical and operational data from a lengthy survey, completed by most of the 177 hospitals asked to participate. The survey asks hundreds of questions about survival rates, nurse staffing, subspecialist availability and many more pieces of critical information difficult or impossible for those in charge of a child’s care to find on their own. The data from the survey is combined with recommendations from pediatric specialists on the hospitals they consider best for children with challenging problems.
