Challenges of Spina Bifida Unite Fifth-Grader's Family

Amelia Murphy was born with spina bifida, a birth defect that affects the spinal column. She has endured complications including a growth hormone deficiency and a heart defect and has had more than 60 surgeries. Her family moved across the country from Seattle to Cincinnati to find her expert care. Today, she is thriving. She's 10 years old and in the fifth grade and is active in sports. She uses a wheelchair for distances, when she is recovering, when she plays soccer, or when she is ill. But she rarely slows down. She is as an ambassador for kids who have medical challenges. Her mom and sisters say she is an inspiration.
