Joe Kastner has paralyzed vocal cords and speaks in a whisper. And his gift to his family is that he has made them better listeners. Joey, 8, was born with a complex airway issue. At first, he needed a trach (an opening to the airway in his neck) just to be able to breathe. Surgery as a toddler allowed him to live without a trach. Doctors at Cincinnati Children's gave Joey a better outcome. His brother, Sam, also was a patient here, and both brothers came to the medical center for speech therapy. Their mom, Jodi, says the experience here changed their lives.
