One of the main interests of Dr. Butsch Kovacic's lab is to improve the understanding of how the environment modifies chronic disease risk in vulnerable children. Specifically, research has focused on using epidemiologic approaches to identify genetic, infectious, environmental and molecular biomarkers of childhood asthma and cancer using human biospecimens as well as clinical and epidemiological data. Over the last two years, members of the group have begun to work with clinicians and community partners to undertake community-based participatory research (CBPR)/mixed methods projects. Recently, academic partners from numerous individuals across Cincinnati Children's and the University of Cincinnati have joined the effort to support these community efforts in a novel way.
