A Cure Before Birth
Not every pregnancy goes as hoped. In these unfortunate situations, a mother may learn that her developing fetus has a congenital disease which could have lifelong consequences for the baby and the family. The logical questions that arise are:
• Why did this happen?
• Can anything be done to treat this condition?
• Will my child have a normal life?
The mission of the Center for Fetal Cellular and Molecular Therapy (CFCMT) is to provide the answers to these questions through collaborative research programs. Fortunately, many diseases and fetal abnormalities can now be prenatally diagnosed through genetic testing and imaging techniques. This early diagnosis provides clues to the origin of these diseases and how they might develop. Furthermore, once the diagnosis is made, the potential exists to begin treatment during the pregnancy and in some instances establish a cure before birth.
